The characters, for instance, never become more than the words used to describe them. Okosan obsesses over pudding; Sakuya believes he is better than everybody else; Shuu is a creepy doctor; this is all we ever learn about these birds. The world-building ramps up neatly in the first half. There’s a murder mystery that starts off with such an act of brutality as to appear almost farcical. There’s a story of sibling rivalry so convoluted that it’s almost impossible to follow who was hatched from which egg. There’s a medical thriller headed up by a doctor that swings so far between coy and apathetic as to come off as robotic in the end.
Aside from being able to enter your own first and last name, the game also gives you the option to display human avatars for each of the birds. So if your heart has a hard time fluttering at the idea of a cute rock pigeon, this option will give you some anime eye candy to fantasize about instead. Thankfully, this option only displays an anime boy during each bird’s introduction scene, so the rest of your time in the game is spent talking to suitors that are very clearly pigeons. Hatoful Boyfriend makes fun of the dating simulator genre by turning it on its head, making it weird and outrageous.
Here’s everything to know about season 3, including information fromBlizzard’s blog post. It’s a smart game too, making off-hand jokes about Kulaks within minutes of the opening scenes. The prospect of a all-pigeon dating game got me interested, but those gags about agrarian social strata in Marxist-Leninist Russia really sealed the relationship. Not that Hatoful Boyfriend is afraid to play smartly-dumb when necessary.
Yes,Hatoful‘s will pause if a scene changes or if a decision arises, but I still had to overcome the occasional panic attack when I saw some new text being skipped over. The game presents you with 7 boys to woo, most of which feature multiple endings depending on your decisions during their plot lines. And because the game wasn’t already risque enough, that mix of boys includes a couple teachers for your romancing enjoyment. Where you go in your free time, what you say to each of the birds, and the statistics you choose to raise during school hours all dictate what pigeon romance you’ll ultimately experience. Of the birds you encounter, there are a number of romance options, including your childhood best friend, an eccentric track star, your teacher and the school doctor.

At the same time, some storylines left me wanting in terms of my protagonist’s character development, and some endings were plain uninteresting and flat. In IGN’s review, we said that the unique dating sim was “able to surpass the label of silly dating sim by presenting interesting themes and characters through strong writing.” @BoldAndBrash I’ve often seen Steve be negative about games. He likes mature serious action/horror games and weird Japanese sims or kiddy platformers are not for him. Basically, he probably only watches Halloween series and Michael Bay movies, too.
Plus seeing typical dating sim tropes portrayed and parodied by pigeon characters is fun in itself. The game shines through as an excellent dating sim experience, but more than that it excels as an incredibly enjoyable narrative adventure. I’ll readily admit that I don’t get it, but Devolver Digital has a pretty solid record of picking indie winners and it seems pretty confident that Hatoful Boyfriend will be a hit. “Our research shows that consumer fatigue for space marines and dragons is at an all-time high—gamers are ready for something new and fresh,” Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker said in a statement. “Semi-realistic pigeon dating simulations are the next great frontier in videogames.” Hatoful Boyfriend is set in an alternate version of Earth in which sapient birds have seemingly taken the place of humans in society for reasons that are hinted at, but not fully explained in the dating simulation portion of the game.
Hatoful Boyfriend is hard to recommend if you’re looking for an interactive novel. But it’s impossible to pass up if you want an eyebrow-raising story. Seeing stock photos of pigeons layered over empty Japanese animation backgrounds is great. I mean, that’s what brought us all here in the first place. It’s only major faults lie in overbaking its loose ends, never knowing when to quit when it comes to throwing in twists and turns, and completely forgetting how to be interactive in the second half. Hatoful Boyfriend threw me for a loop more than a few times.
She was just finishing up Okami when a new face came into the Twitch chat one day. A young man around her age whom she didn’t know at the time was battling his own inner demons. The two started talking briefly on Discord through a shared love of the Breath of Fire series on a mutual friend’s server, and though their interactions were still new, there was still comfort there knowing someone was watching. Hatoful Boyfriend casts you as the only human attending the St. PigeoNations school for birds. A mysterious man approaches them, promising to grant any wish that they make. On 2 September, she decides to check on Ryouta, who had gone to the infirmary earlier that day; the next morning, she fails to show up for class.
I’ve heard it’s quite the trip, so one day I plan to experience it. Shame to see this happen and it’s a weakness of digital gaming for sure. She was no stranger to crushes, but after past experiences of rejection, she pushed it aside not wanting to lose him entirely. However, it seemed other friends suspected there was more than even both of them realized.
